Enjoying Retirement on a Bike

Posted on 20th Jun 2012 @ 6:21 AM

My wife and I were on our way to a local eatery that features a gathering for motorcycles on Tuesday nights. On the way we were stopped at a light when I looked over and noticed an older couple riding a tricked out trike towing a small trailer. I never thought they might be heading for the same restaurant because I typically don't see older bikers at these gatherings. Imagine my delight when they pulled in right behind me.

We parked our car in the side lot then walked across to take a look at some of the bikes before going inside. There was the older couple unhooking their trailer, obviously getting ready to set something up. As it turns out, inside that trailer was a collection of biker gear they had brought to sell among their fellow bikers. As resellers they purchase things like wholesale motorcycle glasses, embroidered patches, T-shirts, and other things bikers would want. A few minutes into the conversation I found out this was their retirement.

This couple splits their time between North and South, following the seasons. Though they don't need the extra money, they have taken up selling motorcycle gear as a hobby. They say it gives them a reason to keep getting on the trike to go to festivals, bike shows, and local gatherings like this one. They also said it keeps them from sitting in a chair all day and wasting away with age; it keeps them young.

It ended up being a very pleasant conversation my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. We would have invited them and to have dinner with us except for the fact that they had to stay outside and man the sales trailer. Hopefully we'll see them down the road someday in the future.
